I’m still in awe of the incredible time we had hosting Akira Naka and his model, Iroha, in Helsinki. As one of the most senior and respected figures in the world of kinbaku, having Naka-sensei join us was a profound honor for Shibari Ropeplay, our associates and our entire community. This visit was a celebration of rope, art, connection, and joy, and I’m so grateful for every moment.

We kicked off the visit with some sightseeing around Helsinki, showing Naka and Iroha the beauty of our city. From the the historic sights to museum of modern art, it was a delight to share these moments with them. Their warmth and curiosity made it feel like we were hosting old friends. We also took them to my student’s tattoo studio, which turned out to be a highlight for everyone. Everybody connected over their shared love of craft, and the energy in the studio was so uplifting.
The workshop was nothing short of extraordinary. Naka-sensei’s mastery is unparalleled, and his teaching carried a depth that left us all inspired. He and Iroha demonstrated ties that were both technically brilliant and emotionally resonant, showing us the heart of kinbaku. Participants were fully engaged, hanging on every word and movement, and the sense of reverence in the room was palpable.
The sold out rope party performance was simply magical. Naka’s and Iroha’s connection on stage was breathtaking, their synergy telling a story of trust and artistry. The audience was captivated, and the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and admiration. It was one of those nights where you could feel the entire community coming together to celebrate something truly special.
Also big thanks to Naoko who came from London to assist Naka-sensei at the workshop and also performed at the party.

Hosting Akira Naka and Iroha was a dream come true. Their presence elevated our practice and brought so much joy to everyone involved. Thank you, Naka-sensei and Iroha, for sharing your knowledge, art and spirit with us. Helsinki will always remember this incredible visit!
